Tobacco and Alcohol: Leading Causes of Cancer

Tobacco and Alcohol: Leading Causes of Cancer

Tobacco and alcohol are among the leading causes of cancer. Globally, a significant portion of cancer cases are linked to tobacco and alcohol use. These substances contribute to cancer both directly and indirectly, and when used over a long period, they can have severe effects on various organs of the body.

Tobacco – Tobacco use, especially smoking cigarettes, is recognized as one of the major causes of cancer. Tobacco contains numerous harmful chemical substances that can alter the DNA of body cells. These mutations can lead to the development of cancer. The most affected areas include the lungs, oral cavity, throat, larynx, and pancreas. Tobacco smoke directly enters the respiratory tract and lungs, significantly increasing the risk of lung cancer and various other types of cancer.

Alcohol – Alcohol also acts as a significant cause of cancer. Especially when consumed in large quantities over a long period, alcohol induces abnormal changes in the body’s cells, which can initiate cancer. Alcohol increases the risk of cancers in the liver, brain, throat, lungs, breast, and stomach. Several studies have shown that the combined use of alcohol and tobacco greatly increases the risk of cancer.

Both tobacco and alcohol weaken the body’s immune system and contribute to the growth of cancer cells. Therefore, avoiding them is a highly effective way to prevent cancer. Through increased awareness, education, and government initiatives, the use of tobacco and alcohol can be reduced, thereby lowering the risk of cancer.

Therefore, by avoiding tobacco and alcohol, the risk of cancer as well as many other serious diseases can be reduced. Awareness and proper lifestyle changes are extremely important in preventing cancer.
