What is Fatty Liver?
Fatty liver disease is a condition in which excess fat accumulates in the liver. While a small amount of fat is normal, too much fat can affect liver function and, if left untreated, may lead to inflammation, liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, or even liver failure. Fatty liver is becoming increasingly common due to unhealthy lifestyles, obesity, and diabetes. The good news is that early-stage fatty liver can often be reversed with proper lifestyle changes and medical care.
Causes of Fatty Liver
- Obesity or being overweight
- Type 2 diabetes
- High cholesterol and high triglyceride levels
- Excessive alcohol consumption
- Unhealthy diet rich in processed foods and sugary drinks
- Lack of regular physical activity
- Rapid weight loss
- Certain medications
- Metabolic syndrome
- Genetic predisposition
Symptoms of Fatty Liver
Many people with fatty liver have no symptoms in the early stages. As the condition progresses, symptoms may include:
- Persistent fatigue or weakness
- Pain or discomfort in the upper right side of the abdomen
- Nausea
- Abdominal bloating
- Enlarged liver
- Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice) in advanced cases
How to Prevent Fatty Liver
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is the best way to prevent and manage fatty liver disease. Eat a balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins. Limit sugary foods, processed foods, and saturated fats. Exercise for at least 150 minutes per week, maintain a healthy body weight, control diabetes and cholesterol, avoid excessive alcohol intake, and have regular health check-ups if you are at risk.
Early diagnosis and timely treatment can prevent serious liver complications. If you experience persistent symptoms or have risk factors, consult a liver specialist for proper evaluation.
