Heart Disease: Timely Treatment Can Save Lives

Heart disease has emerged as a major health concern in Bangladesh. Every day, countless individuals suffer from heart attacks or complications related to cardiovascular conditions. According to medical experts, unhealthy diets, smoking, diabetes, obesity, stress, and lack of physical activity are the key contributors to the rising number of heart disease cases. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that over 200,000 people in Bangladesh die from heart-related conditions each year — a figure that continues to grow. Once considered a disease of the wealthy, heart disease is now affecting people in rural communities as well.
In its early stages, heart disease like blockage may present symptoms during physical exertion, such as discomfort or pain in the center of the chest. Other warning signs include chest heaviness, pressure, pain radiating to the left arm or shoulder, jaw pain, or discomfort in the upper abdomen. Unfortunately, many people ignore these symptoms, which allows the condition to worsen quickly. In more severe cases, patients may experience excessive sweating, shortness of breath, dizziness, or even loss of consciousness. At this point, immediate hospitalization is critical. Tests like ECG and blood work can confirm a heart attack and help guide treatment.
Doctors stress that time is the most critical factor in treating heart attacks. The sooner treatment begins, the higher the chance of survival. Today, advanced procedures like angiography are used to detect and remove blockages in the heart, restoring normal blood flow. This is a modern and highly effective method. In some cases, blood clots are dissolved using special medications. The choice of treatment depends on the patient's condition and the physician's judgment.
World Heart Day, observed globally on September 29 each year, aims to raise awareness about cardiovascular health. This year's theme, "Don't Miss a Beat," reminds us not to ignore even the slightest symptoms of heart disease. With regular health check-ups, timely medical intervention, and lifestyle changes, the risk of heart disease can be significantly reduced.
While public hospitals in Bangladesh offer cardiac care services, they are often overwhelmed with patients. Access to quality cardiac care is especially limited in rural areas, leading to delayed treatment and decreased chances of survival.
In Dhaka, Evercare Hospital is recognized as a leading provider of advanced cardiac care. The hospital is equipped with a modern cath lab, cardiac surgery facilities, a 24/7 emergency heart care unit, and a highly experienced team of doctors. In addition to providing prompt, high-quality medical care, Evercare is also actively involved in promoting heart health awareness. Through regular awareness programs, the hospital emphasizes the importance of healthy eating, quitting smoking, regular exercise, and managing stress.
But Evercare Hospital's efforts go beyond just treatment. The hospital regularly organizes seminars, health camps, and public outreach initiatives to educate people on how to adopt heart-healthy lifestyles. Physicians at the hospital believe that simple lifestyle changes can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease.
Today, heart disease is a national health crisis in Bangladesh. However, with increased awareness, lifestyle modifications, and timely medical care, it is largely preventable. The message of World Heart Day reminds us that awareness, healthy living, and early intervention are the most effective ways to combat heart disease.
