Prostate Cancer in Men: Understanding the Causes and Prevention

Prostate Cancer in Men: Understanding the Causes and Prevention

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men, caused by abnormal cell growth in the prostate gland. It is particularly common among men aged 50 and above, though in some cases it can also affect younger men. The exact cause of prostate cancer is difficult to determine, but there are certain risk factors that increase the likelihood of developing this disease.

Causes of Prostate Cancer:

  • Age: Prostate cancer is more common in older men, particularly those aged 50 and above.
  • Genetics: Men with a family history of prostate cancer are at higher risk. This is especially true if a father or brother has had prostate cancer.
  • Diet and lifestyle: A high-fat diet, processed foods, and low physical activity increase the risk. Additionally, excessive alcohol consumption and tobacco use may also contribute.
  • Hormonal changes: Male hormones such as testosterone can influence the development and growth of prostate cancer.

Prevention of Prostate Cancer: Prostate cancer cannot be completely prevented, but certain lifestyle changes can help reduce the risk:

  • Healthy diet: Consuming fruits, vegetables, and antioxidant-rich foods may lower the risk of prostate cancer. Foods such as soy, broccoli, tomatoes, and nuts are particularly recommended.
  • Regular exercise: Engaging in physical activities like walking, running, or swimming can help reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
  • Health checkups and screening: To detect prostate cancer at an early stage, regular PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) tests and digital rectal examinations are recommended, especially after the age of 50.
Therefore, raising awareness, maintaining a healthy diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and undergoing regular screenings are extremely important to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Through a healthy lifestyle and early detection, men can protect themselves against prostate cancer.
