What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a type of cancer that begins when cells in the breast grow abnormally. These abnormal cells can form a lump or tumor and may invade surrounding tissues or spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body through the blood or lymphatic system.

What are the common symptoms of breast cancer?
Common symptoms of breast cancer include:
  • A lump or thickening in the breast or underarm
  • Change in breast size or shape
  • Dimpling or puckering of the skin
  • Nipple discharge (especially bloody)
  • Redness, swelling, or irritation of the breast or nipple
  • Nipple turning inward (inversion)
Who is at risk of developing breast cancer?
People at higher risk of developing breast cancer include:
  • Women (though men can get it too)
  • Older adults — risk increases with age
  • Those with a family history of breast or ovarian cancer
  • People with inherited gene mutations
  • Those with early menstruation (before age 12) or late menopause (after 55)
  • Never having children or having a first child after age 30
  • Hormone therapy use after menopause
  • Obesity or being overweight
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Lack of physical activity
