The symptoms of a heart attack (Heart Attack / Myocardial Infarction) usually start suddenly. However, in many cases, they may appear gradually. The main symptoms are—

  • Chest pain or pressure – Severe pain, heavy pressure, or burning sensation in the middle of the chest.
  • Radiating pain – Pain may spread to the arm (especially the left arm), neck, jaw, abdomen, or back.
  • Shortness of breath – Difficulty breathing normally.
  • Sweating – Unusual sweating along with chest pain.
  • Nausea or vomiting – Feeling nauseated or vomiting.
  • Dizziness or fainting – Feeling lightheaded or losing consciousness.
  • Weakness and fatigue – Sudden extreme weakness.

In women, diabetic patients, and the elderly, symptoms may appear differently:

  • Only shortness of breath
  • Nausea
  • Back pain
  • Sudden fatigue

What to Do in Case of a Heart Attack (First Aid Guidelines)

  • Call an ambulance -Take the patient to the nearest hospital without delay.
  • Keep the patient calm – Allow the patient to sit or lie down, Loosen tight clothing.
  • Provide oxygen (if blood oxygen level is low) – Use an oxygen mask if the patient has breathing difficulty.
  • Start CPR – If the patient is unconscious and not breathing, place your hands in the middle of the chest and press 100–120 times per minute.

What NOT to Do

  • Do not waste time at local treatment centers or pharmacies.
  • Do not make the patient walk or run.
  • Do not panic or create chaos by shouting.

Actions to Take During the Golden Hour

  • Take the patient quickly to a hospital where emergency heart treatment is available.
  • As per the doctor’s advice, thrombolytic medication or angioplasty may be performed.
  • The sooner the blocked artery is opened, the better the heart can be protected.

First 1 hour = The golden time to save a life

Treatment within 3 hours = Better recovery is possible

After 6 hours = A large portion of the heart becomes permanently damaged
