Abdominal pain is a frequent medical issue with various causes, some of which may indicate serious conditions. This article discusses common causes of abdominal pain such as acute abdomen, appendicitis, peptic ulcer, and potential complications following surgery.

Acute Abdomen:
Acute abdomen is a medical emergency characterized by sudden and severe abdominal pain, often localized and rapidly worsening.
Causes include:

  • Appendicitis

  • Peptic ulcer

  • Gallstones

  • Intestinal obstruction

  • Internal bleeding

Symptoms:

  • Severe abdominal pain

  • Vomiting

  • Fever

  • Loss of appetite

  • Abdominal distension

Treatment generally requires surgery depending on the cause.

Appendicitis:
Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix, a small organ attached to the large intestine.
Caused by infection inside the appendix; exact cause remains unknown.
Symptoms include pain near the navel shifting to the lower right abdomen, vomiting, fever, loss of appetite, and swelling.
Treatment involves surgical removal of the appendix.

Peptic Ulcer:
A peptic ulcer is a sore in the stomach or intestinal lining.
Causes:

  • Helicobacter pylori infection

  • Excessive use of aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs

  • Stress

Symptoms include burning abdominal pain, discomfort after eating, vomiting, and loss of appetite.
Treatment uses antacids, antibiotics, and proton pump inhibitors.

Post-Surgery Complications:
Possible complications after surgery include:

  • Infection at the surgical site or elsewhere

  • Bleeding during or after surgery

  • Blood clots in veins or arteries

  • Anesthesia-related reactions

Post-Operative Care:

  • Take medications as prescribed by the doctor

  • Keep the wound clean

  • Get adequate rest

  • Eat a healthy diet
