Hernia in children is a relatively common condition. It occurs when an internal organ, usually a part of the intestine, pushes through a weak spot in the abdominal wall, creating a visible bulge. Although it may look alarming, timely diagnosis and proper treatment can ensure complete recovery.

Types of Hernia in Children

  • Umbilical Hernia: The most common type in children, appearing as a small swelling near the navel.
  • Inguinal Hernia: More common in boys, where part of the intestine passes through the inguinal canal in the groin.
  • Femoral Hernia: Seen more often in girls, occurring when intestine pushes through the femoral canal.

Causes of Hernia

The exact cause is not always known, but some factors include:

  • Congenital weakness: Weakness in the abdominal wall muscles present from birth.
  • Persistent cough: Prolonged coughing increases abdominal pressure.
  • Heavy lifting: In older children, lifting heavy objects may contribute.

Signs and Symptoms

  • A swelling or bulge around the navel or groin area.
  • Pain or discomfort, especially during coughing or activity.
  • Increased crying or irritability in infants due to discomfort.

Treatment for Hernia

The only permanent treatment for hernia is surgery. The procedure involves placing the bulging tissue back inside the abdomen and strengthening the weak spot.

When Surgery is Needed

  • If the hernia is growing in size.
  • If the hernia causes pain.
  • If the bulge becomes trapped and does not go back in.

Types of Surgery

  • Open Surgery: A small incision is made to repair the hernia.
  • Laparoscopic Surgery: Minimally invasive surgery performed through tiny incisions with special instruments.

Post-Surgery Care

Children need rest for a few days after surgery. Parents should follow the doctor’s advice regarding medicines, wound care, and hygiene to prevent infection.

Conclusion

Child hernia is common but should never be ignored. If you notice any swelling in your child’s abdomen or groin, consult a pediatric surgeon without delay. At Evercare Hospital Chattogram, our team of experts provides safe, advanced treatment and compassionate care for children.
