What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic condition in which the body cannot regulate blood sugar (glucose) properly. Glucose is the main source of energy for the body, and insulin—a hormone produced by the pancreas—helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels. In diabetes, either insulin production is insufficient or the body cannot use it effectively.

Types of Diabetes

  • Type 1 Diabetes: The body produces little or no insulin. It usually develops in childhood or adolescence.
  • Type 2 Diabetes: The body produces insulin, but it does not work effectively. Common in adults, it is increasingly seen in younger individuals due to poor diet, irregular sleep, and obesity.

Symptoms

Diabetes symptoms may develop gradually and vary among individuals:

  • Excessive thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Increased hunger
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing wounds
  • Tingling in hands and feet

Causes

  • Genetics: Family history increases risk.
  • Lifestyle: Obesity, inactivity, poor diet, and smoking contribute to higher risk.
  • Age: Risk increases with age.
  • Other health conditions: High blood pressure and high cholesterol can raise diabetes risk.

Complications

Long-term diabetes can lead to:

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Kidney disease
  • Nerve damage
  • Eye problems
  • Fatty liver
  • Diabetic skin disorders
  • Recurrent infections

Prevention

While diabetes cannot be completely prevented, lifestyle changes can lower the risk:

  • Healthy diet: Eat vegetables, fruits, and whole grains; reduce sugar and fatty foods.
  • Regular exercise: At least 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly.
  • Weight management: Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Quit smoking: Smoking increases diabetes risk.
  • Monitor blood pressure and cholesterol: Follow doctor’s advice and take prescribed medication.

Treatment

Diabetes treatment is individualized and may include:

  • Lifestyle changes: Balanced diet, regular exercise, and weight management.
  • Medications: To regulate blood sugar levels.
  • Insulin therapy: Essential for type 1 diabetes and sometimes used in type 2 diabetes.

With proper treatment and lifestyle modifications, diabetes can be effectively managed. If you experience any symptoms of diabetes, consult a healthcare professional promptly.
