Oral cancer is a serious disease that can develop inside the mouth or on the lips. While it may sound frightening, early detection makes treatment much more effective. Being aware of its warning signs and taking preventive measures are key to reducing risk.

Early Symptoms of Oral Cancer
The signs of oral cancer are often mistaken for common mouth problems. If any of these symptoms persist for a long time, consult a doctor:

  • Persistent pain, burning, or irritation in the mouth, especially on the tongue, cheek, or lips.

  • A sore in the mouth that does not heal.

  • White or red patches inside the mouth.

  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or speaking.

  • Swelling in the mouth or neck.

  • Hoarseness or changes in voice.

  • Unexplained bleeding in the mouth.

  • Loose teeth or gum bleeding.

  • Ear pain.

  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck.

Causes of Oral Cancer
Several factors increase the risk of oral cancer, including:

  • Smoking and tobacco use – the leading cause of oral cancer.

  • Excessive alcohol consumption.

  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection.

  • Prolonged sun exposure (increasing lip cancer risk).

  • Weak immune system.

Prevention of Oral Cancer
Adopting healthy lifestyle habits can reduce the risk of oral cancer:

  • Quit smoking and avoid tobacco use.

  • Limit alcohol intake.

  • Protect lips from sun exposure with sunscreen.

  • Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

  • Practice good oral hygiene with regular brushing and flossing.

  • Visit your dentist and doctor regularly for check-ups.

Staying alert to the early symptoms and following preventive measures are crucial to protect yourself from oral cancer. If you notice any unusual signs, seek medical advice immediately.
