Uterine Tumors: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

A uterine tumor is an abnormal growth in the muscle or other tissues of the uterus. It is usually non-cancerous (benign), but in some cases, there is a possibility of it becoming cancerous. These tumors are commonly called fibroids.

Causes of Uterine Tumors

The exact cause of uterine tumors is not yet known. However, experts believe the estrogen hormone plays a key role in their growth. Other contributing factors include:

  • Heredity: If a family member has uterine tumors, other members have a higher chance of developing this problem.

  • Race: This problem is more commonly seen in African-American women.

  • Age: The issue is more prevalent in women of reproductive age.

  • Obesity: Excess weight can increase the risk of uterine tumors.

Symptoms of Uterine Tumors

  • Irregular Menstruation: Heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged bleeding, or bleeding between periods.

  • Abdominal Pain: Pain in the lower abdomen, back pain, pain during sexual intercourse.

  • Urinary Problems: Frequent urge to urinate, pain during urination, blood in the urine.

  • Constipation: Sluggish bowel movements.

  • Bloating: Swelling of the abdomen.

  • Fatigue: Feeling tired all the time.

Symptoms can vary from person to person, and in many cases, there may be no symptoms at all.

Treatment for Uterine Tumors

The treatment for uterine tumors depends on the size and location of the tumor, as well as the patient's age and health. In some cases, no treatment is necessary, but in others, the following treatment methods are used:

  • Medication: Pain relievers, medication to reduce bleeding, hormone therapy, etc.

  • Surgery: Surgery is performed to remove the tumor (myomectomy or hysterectomy).

  • Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE): This procedure blocks the blood supply to the tumor, causing it to shrink.

Preventing Uterine Tumors

While it may not be possible to completely prevent uterine tumors, the following measures can help reduce the risk:

  • Balanced Diet: Maintain a healthy weight by eating a balanced diet.

  • Regular Exercise: Engage in regular physical activity.

  • Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Refrain from smoking and alcohol consumption.

  • Regular Doctor Consultations: Seek regular advice from a doctor.

If you experience any symptoms of a uterine tumor, be sure to consult a specialist doctor.
