Evercare Hospital Chattogram has successfully completed the first-ever autologous bone marrow transplant (BMT) in the port city.

Dr Abu Jafar Mohammad Saleh, a senior consultant coordinator of Hematology and BMT Centre at Evercare Hospital Chattogram, and his team performed the stem cell transplant on a 50-year-old patient named Farid Uddin Babar in a period of 12 days.

The transplant procedure began on 19 January and the patient will be discharged from the hospital on Tuesday, the hospital announced in a press conference on Monday.

A bone marrow transplant is a procedure that infuses healthy blood-forming stem cells into a patient’s body to replace the damaged bone marrow that is not producing enough healthy blood cells.

“We are thrilled to announce the successful completion of the first autologous bone marrow transplant at Chattogram Evercare. This is a major milestone for the hospital and the people of Chattogram as well. Now patients no longer have to travel to Dhaka or outside the country for this life-saving treatment,” said Dr Abu Jafar Mohammed Saleh.

“By adding BMT to our services, we are now able to offer patients the best healthcare at a much lower cost, making it more accessible for everyone in need,” he said, adding that the BMT service in Chattogram will cost only Tk6,34,000, which is Tk2 lakh less than it costs in Dhaka.

“Evercare has made huge investments to bring revolutionary changes in the healthcare sector of the port city. The bone marrow transplant in Chennai costs 10 lakh rupees, excluding other expenses,” Dr Abu Zafar added.

At the press event, Sameer Singh, the chief operating officer (COO) at Evercare Hospital Chattogram, said, “Though Evercare is a corporate organisation, we have a social responsibility too. We want to inform local patients that they do not have to go to Dhaka or India’s Chennai for better treatment.”

Evercare Hospital Chattogram recently replanted a completely amputated hand of a patient successfully.

Trauma Surgery Specialist Dr Rivu Raj Chakraborty of the hospital along with cardiovascular surgery specialist Dr Md Sanaul Haque Sarkar carried out the surgery.

42-years-old man Mokarram Hossain was admitted to the hospital after an accident.His right hand was completely amputated in the incident.
In this case, with the consent of the patient and his family, the doctors decided to perform a surgery that took almost 11 hours to complete.

Dr Rivu Raj Chakraborty said the bones, blood vessels, nerves and muscles of the patient’s hand were surgically attached during the surgery.

“It was a very complicated and time-consuming procedure and such surgery required advanced technology and management. We are glad that the surgery was successfully completed,” he said.

The patient was kept under proper observation and was able to go home after eight days, he said.

শনিবার (২৯ অক্টোবর) দুপুরে বিশ্ব স্ট্রোক দিবস উপলক্ষে আয়োজিত বিশেষ সেমিনারে এভারকেয়ার হসপিটাল চট্টগ্রামের মহাব্যবস্থাপক ডা. ফজলে আকবর এ কথা বলেন।

সেমিনারে অংশ নিয়ে এভারকেয়ার হসপিটালের নিউরোলজি বিভাগের সিনিয়র কনসালটেন্ট ডা. হামিদুল হক বলেন, ‘স্ট্রোকের দুটি ধরন সম্পর্কে আমরা অবগত এবং উভয় ক্ষেত্রেই উপসর্গ প্রায় এক। তাই সঠিক পরীক্ষা ছাড়া রোগের ধরন নির্ণয় প্রায় অসম্ভব। স্ট্রোকে অনেকের জীবনই সম্পূর্ণ বদলে গেছে। তবে প্রাথমিক গাইডলাইন মোতাবেক চললে জটিল অবস্থা থেকে রেহাই পাওয়া সম্ভব। সবার প্রতি আমার আহ্বান, স্ট্রোক হলে অবহেলা না করে তাৎক্ষণিক ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণ করুন।’

নিউরোলজি বিভাগের কনসালটেন্ট ডা. মোহাম্মদ নাজিম উদ্দিন বলেন, ‘স্ট্রোকের কারণে রোগী অজ্ঞান হয়ে গেলে তাৎক্ষণিকভাবে রোগীর শ্বাসনালি, শ্বাস-প্রশ্বাস ও রক্ত সঞ্চালন সচল রাখার (সিপিআর থেরাপি এক্ষেত্রে বিশেষ কার্যকর) চেষ্টা করতে হবে। রোগীকে একদিকে কাত করে বালিশ ছাড়া মাথা নিচু করে শোয়াতে হবে। চোখ ও চোখের প্রতিক্রিয়া বা সংকেতের দিকে খেয়াল রাখতে হবে। মূত্রথলির যত্ন নিতে হবে এবং প্রয়োজনে ক্যাথেটার ব্যবহার করতে হবে। প্রয়োজনীয় পদক্ষেপ গ্রহণ রোগীর সুস্থ হওয়ার সম্ভাবনা বাড়িয়ে তোলে।’

নিউরো সার্জারি বিভাগের সিনিয়র কনসালটেন্ট ও কো-অর্ডিনেটর ডা. আনিসুল ইসলাম খান বলেন, ‘স্ট্রোকের ক্ষেত্রে ফিজিওথেরাপি অন্যতম একটি চিকিৎসা পদ্ধতি। অনেক সময় দেখা যায়, বিশেষ করে গ্রামাঞ্চল বা প্রান্তিক অঞ্চলগুলোয় ফিজিওথেরাপি নিয়ে জনমনে সচেতনতা খুবই কম। অনেক রোগীরই স্ট্রোকের পর হাত-পা বেঁকে যায় এবং বাকি জীবন এভাবেই থেকে যায়। সেসব রোগীদের জন্য ফিজিওথেরাপি উপকারী। অনেকে ভাবেন ফিজিওথেরাপি চিকিৎসা কোনও কাজে আসে না। তবে ধারণাটি সম্পূর্ণ ভুল। তবে সঠিক স্থানে ও সঠিকভাবে চিকিৎসা গ্রহণ করতে হবে। কোর্স সম্পূর্ণ করলে সুস্থ-স্বাভাবিক জীবনে ফিরে আসার সম্ভাবনা বেশি।’

নিউরোলজি বিভাগের সহযোগী কনসালটেন্ট ডা. এ. এম. সাফায়েত হোসেন বলেন, ‘স্ট্রোক বিশ্বব্যাপি খুবই কমন একটি সমস্যা বা রোগ। একটি ভুল অনেকেই করেন যে, স্ট্রোক হচ্ছে হৃদযন্ত্রের কোনও সমস্যা। তবে সেটি ভুল। স্ট্রোক মস্তিষ্কের একটি রোগ। অনিয়ন্ত্রিত উচ্চ-রক্তচাপ স্ট্রোকের অন্যতম প্রধান কারণ। এছাড়া ধুমপান, মাদক, দুশ্চিন্তা ও ডায়াবেটিস ইত্যাদি স্ট্রোকের ঝুঁকি বাড়ায়। তাই সবার প্রতি আমার আহ্বান, অস্বাস্থ্যকর জীবনযাপন ত্যাগ করুন, স্ট্রোকমুক্ত সমাজ গড়ুন।’

The Evercare Group, a leading impact-driven healthcare group investing in emerging markets on October 10 announced the official inauguration of its latest venture, Evercare Hospital Chittagong, the first ever multispecialty tertiary care hospital in the port city of Bangladesh.

Evercare hospitals launch the First Comprehensive Pediatric Cardiology Service in the port city, under the stewardship of renowned Pediatric Cardiologist Dr. Tahera Nazrin

Recently,scoliosis correction surgery was completed successfully for a 12-year-old child at Evercare Hospital Chattogram. Dr. Md. Anisul Islam Khan, the senior consultant and coordinator of the hospital’s neurosurgery department, successfully executed this complex operation together with his team.

The child Tasfia Azam Fariha was born with spinal cord problems. On March 3^rd, 2022, Fariha was brought to the neurosurgery department of Evercare Hospital Chattogram for this same issue. The top of Tasfia’s spine was slightly curved on one side, which was making her unable to walk normally.

According to her relatives, the patient’s problem began worsening from the age of 8 years, after which she was treated abroad. When Dr. Md. Anisul Islam Khan took charge, he discovered with the help of a CT scan, X-ray, and MRI that the patient’s spine had returned to its previous state due to a broken rod from some of the instruments used in the previous surgery. This condition is termed scoliosis. On July 21, 2022, with the consent of the patient’s family, Dr. Anis decided to perform scoliosis correction surgery on the patient.

Speaking about the surgery, Dr. Md. Anisul Islam Khan, Senior Consultant and Coordinator of the Neurosurgery Department of Evercare Hospital Chattogram said, “Little Fariha’s condition was critical when she was first brought to Evercare. It was difficult to keep her in a normal state with basic medical care. However, since this condition has not been treated in Chattogram before, there was some hesitancy on the part of the family to treat Fariha here. Finally, they agreed; and with Evercare Hospital Chattogram’s world-class medical facilities, advanced equipment, and skilled medical team, we were able to very efficiently perform the first scoliosis correction surgery in Chattogram, on Fariha. I am happy to report that Fariha’s curved spine is now straightened. She was ambulating normally on the day after the surgery and was discharged on July 28, 2022.”
